Yet Another Palm Frond Causes Yet Another
SCE Outage
A lack of preventive
maintenance, once again, means that yet another palm frond caused 187 households
to lose power in Beverly Hills.
Destruction
of Public Property By Public Works Personnel
The needless
slashing of Beverly Gardens Park's wisteria vines, to replace its pergola,
exemplifies the lack of communication between the City's Recreation & Parks and
Public Works departments. The result was destruction of wisteria vines that
could easily have been saved.

The Elderly: A Letter To Rod Wood
Beverly
Hills can and must do more to meet the needs of the 30% of its residents
who are frail elderly, disabled, low income and those with limited
transportation options, the Human Relations Commission was told.

Are Doctors Too Cozy With Big Pharma?
The recall
of Vioxx after tens of millions have been exposed to its serious risks
raises questions about the safety of our pharmaceutical system, and
about the cozy relationship of doctors with drug companies that wine and
dine them.
Plastic Lawns: The Wrong Answer
An article
in The Los Angeles Times suggested that plastic faux lawns could be
helpful in reducing the region's water shortage. But this ignores the
real impacts of this kind of quick fix.
Smart Farming and Water For The Cities
As much as
85% of California's water is used by agriculture. Despite this, the state
has no requirements for agricultural users to conserve. With legislation
mandating that builders first secure an assured 20-year supply of water
before they commence construction, the race is now on for more and more
water to be made available to developers.
Diesel Trucks
When dozens of
massive diesel truck travel our residential streets, the cost to homeowners
isn't just a loss of peace and quiet. Those fumes are dangerous. Here's what
you can do about it.
Underground Wires
The
wildfires that raced across Southern California badly damaged the poles
and cables of the region's electric power grid. Now ratepayers will pick
up the tab. Putting the wires underground, as is common in Europe, makes
a lot more sense. But the utilities resist undergrounding.
Over-Tall Shrubs
Shrubs can
be a beautiful addition to a home's landscaping. But what happens when
they are allowed to grow so tall that they block the view and light for
adjacent homes? There are remedies available for homeowners who find
themselves in unwelcome shade.
Basic Services After Deregulation
Changing an
aging power pole should not involve the unexpected loss of electricity and
phone service, after promises that they would be uninterrupted. But in an
era of deregulation of basic services, the goal seems to be on cost
reduction, not quality of service to customers.
Selective Code Enforcement
As
City officials are enjoying their hermetically sealed, air conditioned,
up-to-code facilities, they appear to be unaware of what many of the
taxpaying serfs below them are experiencing. Going for a walk in Beverly
Hills’ residential neighborhoods or taking a swim in a friend’s nearby
pool should be a relaxing pleasure. Instead, it’s frequently like being
in the midst of a battlefield. What can be done?
Of, By and For Just Some
of The People
On
any given Sunday, the City of Beverly Hills promotes cultural and
community programs which are supported by the tax dollars of all of its
citizens. However, those of us who are among the growing number of frail
elderly and disabled residents, often cannot avail ourselves of these
community benefits. Isn't it time for the City Council to make our
inclusion a high priority?
